Metal Railings in London — Common Questions
What types of metal railings do you make and repair?
We work across every common railing metal: cast iron, wrought iron, mild steel and stainless steel. That covers ornate Victorian cast iron panels and finials, traditional hand-forged wrought iron, fabricated mild steel railings for boundaries and access platforms, and modern stainless steel balustrades. If you are unsure what your existing railings are made from, send us a photo and we will tell you.
Can cast iron railings be repaired, or do they need replacing?
In most cases cast iron railings can be repaired rather than replaced. Broken sections can be cut out and new lengths spliced in, missing finials and decorative castings can be matched, and corroded fixings renewed. Full replacement is usually only needed where the metal has rusted through beyond economical repair. Because cast iron is brittle and cannot simply be welded like steel, the right method matters, which is why heritage railing repair is a specialist job.
Do I need planning permission or listed building consent for railings?
It depends on the property and the railing. New boundary railings over one metre high next to a road or footpath usually need planning permission, while lower railings are often permitted development. If your building is listed, or sits in a conservation area, separate listed building consent or conservation area rules normally apply to any new, altered or replacement railings, including repairs that change the original appearance.
We work regularly on Grade I and Grade II listed buildings and can advise on what is likely to be required, but the final position should always be confirmed with your local planning authority.
Which parts of London and the surrounding areas do you cover?
Based in Loughton on the Essex edge of London, we cover the whole of London along with the surrounding counties: Essex, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Kent and Surrey. We carry out both new railing installation and on-site repair work across the region.
How much do metal railings cost in London?
There is no single price because cost depends on the run length, the metal, how much decorative detail is involved, site access, and whether the property is listed. A short straight run of plain mild steel railing is very different from matching ornate cast iron on a period frontage. The most reliable way to get an accurate figure is to send us measurements and photos, or arrange a site visit, and we will quote for the specific job.
What finishes can you apply to new or repaired railings?
We finish railings to suit both appearance and protection against the weather. Options include hot-dip galvanising for long-term corrosion resistance, powder-coating in a wide range of colours, and traditional paint systems where a heritage finish is needed. The right choice depends on the metal, the setting and whether the railings are listed.
What is involved in repairing rusted or damaged railings?
Repair work typically means removing corrosion and failed paint, cutting out and replacing any sections that have rusted through, re-forming or re-casting missing decorative parts, re-fixing loose railings back into stone or brickwork, and then refinishing to protect the metal. Smaller repairs can often be done on site, while heavily corroded or ornate sections may come back to our workshop. Either way the aim is to keep as much of the original railing as possible.
